Module 7

Module 7: Learning Management Systems (LMS)

For this module, we were given access to Haiku. Using Haiku we were to develop and explore the use of learning management systems. This hands on experience with a LMS has allowed me to reflect on the benefits and uses of learning management systems in K-12 classrooms.

Part A: LMS Setup

For this module, I developed a film studies component for an English 20 class. I found Haiku difficult to use at first, but with time and practice am certain it would be a fantastic teaching tool. I used Haiku to provide an overview of the class and of the major class assignment.

I also created a discussion forum where students would be expected to continue discussions from in-class and reflect on assignments, videos, and readings.

I utilized the calendar feature to keep students informed of due dates.

I also used the assignment tool to create a class assignment.

Part B: Learning Management Systems (LMS) Reflection

I used many tools in Haiku and envision this lesson plan as an extension of the face-to-face classroom.

Discussion Tool: I used the discussion tool to create a forum for students to engage in a dialogue about in-class discussion, class texts, and class projects. This space would be an extension of the face-to-face classroom allowing students to continue discussions that there were not time for. This space is also ideal for those students that do not feel comfortable talking in class. It provides an alternate venue for peer discussion.

Assignment Tool: I created an assignment using this tool. The assignment I created would be a quick and informal reflection activity. By having this assignment outside of class time it would allow students the space to reflect on their progress with in-class projects.

Calendar Tool: I used the calendar tool to input all important dates and due dates. This is a useful tool as it keeps students informed and up-to-date about the progress of the class.

Assessment Tool: I observed and practiced using the assessment tool, but did not include it in this reflection. For the purposes of the class I choice (English 20) I did not feel that Haiku was best served by inputting multiple choice exams. I envision Haiku as a space to extend the classroom by posting discussions, resources, and reflections, as well as a space to find all information concerning the course (course outline, due dates, and assignments).

Other tools: I also created resources in the Attendance and Grading tools. These tools would not be visible to students, but would be a useful space for me to monitor grading and attendance for the particular class.
